INTERNET AUDIO/ MP3: Overview
Portable Audio players are handheld devices that play recorded music or speech. Many formats like MP3, ACC or WMA are used for recording the audio. The storage medium used in the players determines the form factor, weight, battery life, user interface, and price of these players.

Ultra-portable players are built with internal flash memory like SmartMedia cards, MultiMediaCards, Secure Digital cards or CompactFlash cards. The available capacities of these cards vary from 8 MB to 4 GB. The portable audio players are moving towards being a portable media player (PMP) with the support of Video as well. A good model will support MPEG-2 and 4, WMV and DivX movie formats, as well as MP3, WAV, ASF and WMA audio files. Some can also receive and record FM radio and voice. The latest PMPs now also support wireless connectivity in addition to USB or Firewire for recording and exchanging music and movies.

The hardware used in these players is being constantly improved to support enhanced quality audio and advanced video compression etc. With the development of miniature 1.8-inch hard disks most of the players now come with a hard disk capacity of 4 GB to 80 GB. The use of Digital Signal Processors and dedicated Mpeg-4 decoders is becoming common.

Audio – the Commodity that Isn't

By Larry Przywara, Tensilica, Inc. Audio is becoming pervasive and is being designed into a wide variety of products. Many new chip designs contain an audio processor just in case it’s needed in future product revisions, since an audio processor can often be implemented in under 100,000 gates on a multi-million gate chip. Some consumer devices contain multiple audio processors – a...  >>
